OCC People: Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations from across the OCC
OCC employees in the field and Headquarters took part in several events held in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place each year from September 15 through October 15. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Hispanics: Serving and Leading Our Nation with Pride and Honor.”
Members of the Hispanic Organization for Leadership and Advancement (HOLA) organized events throughout the month. In the Southern District Office, employees took part in a Hispanic Heritage-themed crossword puzzle and played a “Who Am I” game in which they guessed the identities of famous Hispanics, such as actress Rita Moreno, musician Carlos Santana, and baseball player Roberto Clemente. The event was organized by Javier Maymir, Anna Barclay, Yessica Sosa, Teresa Ozono, and Kelly Anderson.
Elsewhere in the Southern District, Molly Neureuther of the Tampa field office organized an event that featured a trivia game and a variety of Hispanic foods.
At the Chicago Midsize office, Idalia Zuniga organized a salsa-making contest, and a game of “lotería,” which is a Mexican game of chance similar to bingo.
Employees in the Central District Office participated in a team activity in which each team created its own version of the Day of the Dead/Día De Los Muertos masks. In addition, the Central District held its annual salsa-tasting contest, and employees put their homemade salsas to a vote for the best-tasting salsa. Senior Attorney Patrick Haggerty won with his entry “Lágrimas Del Diablo (The Devil’s Tears).” The event was organized by Sharee McClellan, Karen Smith, and Annette Cuellar.
Northeastern District Office employees watched an hour of the new PBS series “Latinos in America.” They also ate Dominican cake and Argentine empanadas. This event was organized by Ancris Ramdhanie and HOLA President Christian Errico.
Headquarters employees celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month at the annual “Cafecito con HOLA.” Midy Aponte, Executive Director of the American Latino Heritage Fund, was the featured speaker. Following her presentation, employees enjoyed various Hispanic treats and refreshments.
