Welcome to our all staff conference, OCC. As the federal banking system and our supervisory responsibilities become more complex, the need for collaboration among employees and business units at the OCC has never been greater. Effective collaboration builds trust, and that trust is foundational to the health of the federal banking system.
Throughout the conference, we will be breaking down silos, fostering innovation through teamwork, and strengthening connections with each other. The content we’ve planned aims to reinvigorate our culture, strengthen our sense of inclusion, and reinforce our shared mission, history, goals, and vision.
The Executive Committee hopes you come away from this conference with stronger connections to your colleagues, a renewed commitment to our mission, and a clearer sense of how you can make a difference in “Safeguarding Trust.”

Welcome Remarks: Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael J. Hsu
Capt. Scott Kelly, Astronaut “Failure IS an Option: Transforming Setbacks Into Success”
As a record-breaking U.S. astronaut who spent a year in space, Capt. Scott Kelly has witnessed firsthand how critical embracing failure can be for achieving greatness. Failure is often perceived as something to be avoided at all costs. However, in the realm of space exploration, failure is not just a possibility; it’s an integral part of the journey. Each setback—whether a malfunctioning system or missed objective—is a lesson that brings us one step closer to success.
Trust plays a pivotal role in this process. By trusting in our teams, our processes, and ourselves, we can harness the power of failure to achieve extraordinary things.
Kelly is a former military fighter pilot and test pilot, engineer, astronaut, and U.S. Navy captain. A veteran of four space flights, he commanded the International Space Station on three expeditions and was a member of the yearlong mission to the station. In October 2015 he set the record for the total accumulated number of days spent in space, the single longest space mission by a U.S. astronaut. He lives in Houston, Texas. Read his biography to learn more. This session will be recorded.

The Silo Effect: A Discussion on Expertise, Collaboration, and Trust
A video interview between Acting Comptroller Hsu and author Gillian Tett. Her book, The Silo Effect, explores how rigidly separated departments within organizations may foster expertise but can also create communication breakdowns and missed opportunities. Acting Comptroller Hsu leads a discussion with Ms. Tett about how breaking down these silos encourages collaboration, trust, and a more holistic approach to solving problems.
Various OCC presenters share personal experiences in a conversation about strategies to overcome internal silos and foster trust, which are essential for effective collaboration in today’s complex environment.
Gillian Tett is a columnist and member of the editorial board for the Financial Times. She writes about economic, financial, political, and social issues. Read her biography for more information.

The Great Mandala
An interactive activity presented by Kerry Ward, FullTilt Team Development
A mandala is a circular pattern used by many cultures across the globe. While a mandala can mean different things to each culture, it is often used to help focus through meditation.
The great mandala activity is an opportunity to leave a mark on the OCC through innovation and collaboration. Small teams will work together and design a unique mandala from colored sand featuring the team’s interpretation of the conference’s theme, “Safeguarding Trust.” These artistic panels then will be combined to create a new piece of art, a great mandala brought together through teamwork.
